Statement

Brunet Saunier Architecture was founded in 1981 in Paris by Jérôme Brunet and Éric Saunier (†). With four decades of experience, a team of 40 people and over a hundred built projects, the practice is well known, both in France and internationally, in a variety of areas.

From our first hospital projects, such as the Institut Saint Pierre at Palavas-les-Flots in the south of France, to our most recent, such as the Institut Jules Bordet in Brussels, the practice has developed a reflection on hospital typologies, which has given rise to an archetype that is now widely recognised, the ‘monospace’. This vision continues to evolve through ongoing projects, such as the university hospitals of Rennes (France), Alger (Algeria) and Helsinki (Finland), or in Paris with the new Lariboisère hospital and the Grand Paris Nord teaching hospital campus.

Beyond healthcare, the practice realises buildings of all kinds: new RER commuter-line train stations in Issy and Porte de Thiais are currently on site as part of the Grand Paris development, the Quinze-Vingt Ophthalmology Hospital’s Institut de la Vision research centre, and the university campuses of Condorcet in Aubervilliers (northern Paris) and Staoueli (Algeria).

Brunet Saunier Architecture designs skilful and contextual technical solutions, from buildings pioneering the technology of the structural use of glass, such as the Saint-Germain-en-Laye administrative centre or the Louvre Museum’s research laboratories, via the Ecotox research centre in Alixan with its passive, bioclimatic facades, to the Nord Franche-Comté hospital and its unique use of timber in a glazed facade. This prospective and innovative approach to construction methods ensures unique and iconic projects for each client, often recognised by awards: winner of the Equerre d’Argent for the Nord Franche-Comté hospital (France), a silver BIM trophy for the Limmattal hospital in Zurich (Switzerland), and a listing on the register of ‘Remarkable Contemporary Architecture’ for the police station at Hérouville-Saint-Clair (France).

Increased complexity led the practice to innovate in its work methods. A pioneer in the use of digital technologies, and in particular BIM, Bruner Saunier Architecture has also incorporated numerous related technologies into the development process of its projects, including 3D printing, virtual reality, and data management systems. Today the practice is working on the use of artificial intelligence in the area of generative design in anticipation of evolutions in architectural practice and the challenges of the 21st century: how to design sustainably, for the long term, for an uncertain, unpredictable future?
